Airbus Academy Report – 18th-20th October 2024

Michelle Griffiths24 Oct 2024 - 11:51

Games including TNS, Stoke City, Salford City and Henllan

Airbus U8s – TNS (H)
The young Wingmakers entertained TNS at home in the sunshine.
At times the boys weren’t quite themselves and we made a few errors, the boys tried their best to get our usual passing game together and several goals were created and scored.
Tight game ending in a draw overall over the two pitches.
Players of the match were George Shirley, tireless defending and looking to start to the play. Riley Jones always a threat going forward

Airbus U9s – Stoke City (A) & TNS (H)
Busy weekend for our WingMaker u9s starting off with a Friday evening visit to Stoke City. In 2x7v7 format vs a strong opposition Airbus started slow but once we enjoyed some possession in the games we grew in confidence leading to success in both matches.
After a late night we had an early K.O. Saturday morning as hosted TNS at Airbus. Our Wingmakers played with intensity from the start showing the work in training of late ref Pass/Receive/Retain in possession and our efforts out of possession, again leading to a successful morning.

Players of the week :
1. Teddy Collins – showed defensive strengths and always looking to start the play at pace from the back.
2. Oscar Davies – another great defensive performance reading the game to perfection and always step ahead of the tns frontline.

Airbus U10s – TNS (H)
Dylan’s report- After a slow start to begin with in the first quarter we managed to make a few adjustments in formation which helped us keep a better balance and more compact in a defensive unit and allowed us to counter press TNS every time they lost the ball.
Second half Airbus grew into the game after a brilliant piece of skill from Bobby lead to an unbelievable goal.
Second game Airbus started the game exactly how I asked them with high intensity and aggression which unsettled an well organised TNS.
After a close intense game Airbus managed to get two excellent goals from Romeo which give us a well deserved lead.
MOTM was difficult to pick but stand out performance was Roux who won all his individual battles and didn’t stop running all game.

Alex’s report - For our second team, within the first game we had an electric start, it was the start that was needed against a well organised and technical TNS side, we moved the ball quickly to exploit spaces and break lines through the opposition and without the ball we were physical, aggressive and looked to disrupt their patterns of play, goals were scored for both teams in a very entertaining game.
In the second game the young Wingmakers lost a little discipline and we couldn’t find the successes we had in previous game but that is something we will take forward and look to improve on.
Player of the week George Graydon – George has had a fantastic start to the season always trains to the highest level, and was prominent in our successes within the first game here, he broke play up and initiated all the pressing and counter pressing. Well done GG

Airbus U11s – TNS (H)
Airbus welcomed a strong TNS side this week, a fixture we always look forward to as we know it will push our capabilities to the limit, and allow us to test our principles against a side we know, will make it hard for us to apply them.
Being quick, strong and technically excellent it was amazing to see our young Wingmakers counter their threat with counter attacks that were built from the back with 2/3 line breaking passes, a phase of play that proved successful a few times throughout the morning ending with some great goals. TNS saw a lot of the ball, but we were able to put pressure on them and quickly adjust to the transition and change our shape to retain possession.
Still, there were areas for us to identify where we can improve both individually and as a team but likewise there were many positives to take from the fixture.

Player of the match - Alan Peda
Great performance from Alan today, using his strength in the middle of the park against a good physical team, Alan worked really hard for his team by trying to breakdown TNS attacks and to win the ball back quickly to regain possession. Alan always looked to play forward and link up with teammates and picked up really positions to support players

Airbus U12s – TNS (H)
On Sunday Airbus played TNS at home. We recently played them away where we were outplayed and lost the game. Learning from that previous game we made some tactical changes to try and keep TNS out.
The lads stuck to these tactics and scored early on the settle the nerves. TNS didn’t really break our defence down with some brilliant reading of the game from our defenders and some excellent tireless work from our midfield.
After extra time Airbus managed to score another goal with a brilliant pass to our striker to score 1v1. With a 2-0 lead TNS tried to put on the pressure but the lads withstood this and kept them out. TNS did manage to score last kick of the game but the lads managed to see the game out for the win 2-1.
Player of the match - Max Derbyshire

Airbus U13s – Salford City (H) & TNS (H)
Two good footballing sides took to the field for the 2pm kick-off.
Airbus started brightly maintaining possession in the TNS half before a cross from Harry Williams was rifled home by Macsen Baker, 1-0 airbus, end to end football for the rest of the half .
Second half and the boys continued creating chances, a set piece by TNS lead to a scrappy equaliser from our point of view.
A lack of communication on the far post, 1-1, game on.
Several rotations during the half kept the pressure on the TNS goal, a thunderous strike from Harry Williams put Airbus ahead with minutes to go and the boys saw it through 2-1 to airbus, well done boys.
Man of the match Fletcher Jones, excellent fearless defending , and started many of our attacks with through balls . Well done

Airbus U14s – TNS (H)
The under 14’s welcomed TNS to the Hollingsworth in difficult conditions with both teams looking to show their strengths that have been so prominent in the opening stages of the season.
It was quite a slow start with both teams not really threatening the final third in any way, the first opening come when we failed to clear a ball sufficiently allowing TNS to cross and head into the goal for 1-0.
We desperately needed to find solutions to breaking the TNS back line but as we approached half time a seemingly safe ball to deal with ended up being slotted away for a 2-0 TNS lead.
Into half time and we revisited the match objectives and how they had faired within the first half, so we could make some adjustments and find a way back into the game.
As we started the second half the Wingmakers began to play around the intense press of TNS with 1 and 2 touch football in wide areas allowing us to progress up the pitch. Something we’d not managed to achieve in the first half.
But again, it was TNS who got the next chance as they attacked down the left and tapped home a cross for 3-0.
It was a game where we were someway off our individual and team objectives and we will reflect together in another learning opportunity for players and coaches.

Player of the week – Joseph Farrell
When our backs were against the wall Joe was individually excellent with the ball at his feet which is something we’re accustomed to now. His ability to stay on the ball when he’s overloaded is very impressive and he is always looking to play penetrating passes to create chances for those in front of him.

Airbus U15s – TNS (A)
Windy was an understatement as the U15’s travelled to play away at TNS. It is always a warm welcome and the matches between the 2 sides in this age group are fierce…this was no different.
The game was always going to be a game of 2 halves with the howling wind blowing towards the goal with the stand behind. In the first half it was in our faces.
However, the match was a cagey affair in the early stages with only a few half chances for both sides. Airbus went close as Harri Edwards went through on goal only to be thwarted by the opposition keeper. We struggled against the high press and strong wind and our decision making and quality was below par.
Disappointingly the young Wingmakers conceded 2 poor goals where our decision making, defensive mindset and composure needed to be much better. We need to learn to not give teams a 2-0 head start.
The U15's are nothing If not resilient. We didn’t let our heads drop & got ourselves back in the game when Harri Edwards followed in a Jake Pendlebury penalty to make it 1-2.
Strong running from the relentless Harri Edwards saw us get behind the TNS defence. As he got brought down in the box the referee played an advantage and Jake Pendlebury slotted home confidently from inside the box. 2-2 @ half time and game on.
Detailed and direct conversation was had between coaches and players at half time with the message that we needed to show more quality in possession and keep our discipline in midfield areas.
We had the wind with us second half and immediately we played through their midfield and Jake Pendlebury was through one on one only to be thwarted by the opposition keeper who made a fine double save as Fin Geary followed up well.
We never looked in total control but never really looked in any danger throughout the 2nd half, but GK Jack Booth did make a good save from a TNS set piece.
Our defensive line was more connected in the 2nd half and we dealt with anything that TNS threw at us. We were calm under pressure and Evan Roberts made a number of line breaking passes into the central midfield pocket.
We had numerous corners and finally our pressure resulted in a chance where Evan Roberts headed towards goal and Harri Edwards was in the right place to prod home 3-2 to us with 11 minutes to go.
We had a couple of half chances to seal the result only for TNS to gain a free kick deep into injury time where their keeper came up…Roy Of The Rovers Stuff.
We defended the free kick well and Fin Hayes sprinted forward to carry the ball to the half way line, he and Harri played the ball forward to captain Alex Mossman to strike the ball into an empty net.
4-2 and the lads earned an excellent result in the end in tough conditions. Not our best performance by any means, but both teams played their part in an end to end encounter.

Player of the week: Sam Ibbitson – Growing week by week into an excellent defender. His performance throughout was intelligent out of possession and in possession he looked to drive us forward, especially in the 2nd half. The development that Sam has shown the past 15 months has been very noticeable. He trains well, has a great personality around the squad and totally deserves this nomination for his weeks work.

Airbus U16s – TNS (A)
We travelled to Park Hall on a Sunday afternoon for the reverse fixture in what was a closely contested game. Airbus started the game well overall. We defended from the front really well and were causing TNS some problems regaining possession higher up the pitch. Whilst TNS looked good in the switch of play it was up to Airbus to adapt to this.
Airbus didn’t get the goal they deserved after hitting the cross bar and also having a one on one saved. TNS took the lead from a throw in rotation allowed them to progress forward with possession and scoring outside the box. Airbus had a frantic five minutes after the goal but settled down to hit the woodwork again. TNS doubled their lead before halftime when they scored a rebound from a shot outside the box.
Although 2-0 down Airbus created some good chances. Airbus re grouped at half time but disappointingly we conceded three minutes into the second half from a wide free kick. Airbus continued pushing and creating chances but just one of those days in front of goal with the TNS goalkeeper pulling off some good saves second half too.

Player of the match – Max Mason. Executed his instructions as asked by the coaches really well. Defended well in 1v1s & contributed well going forward. He covered a lot of distance to press and make recovery runs.

Under 19s – TNS (A)
Sunday saw the 19’s Travel to Park Hall for a slightly earlier than normal kick off to play against TNS
Knowing this is probably one of the hardest teams to come and compete against in our schedule we spent a lot of the weeks training linking it directly to todays game
The hosts did not disappoint and came out strong dominating the majority of possession. Airbus were equal to the majority of the pressure and were very disciplined without the ball frustrating our opponents
On 15’ we managed to settle with a little possession ourselves and found a way to goal 2-3 times. Finally with a nice piece of preplanned play we found ourselves in behind for Harry Jones to set Robbie Jones for a tap in. Airbus 1-0
For the rest of the first half TNS had possession but couldn’t break down our defensive organisation. Half time 1-0 Airbus
Second half started much the same way and TNS dominating the ball. Half time obviously they tried to come up with a few solutions but again Airbus were equal to most attacking phases
Again Airbus remained patient and disciplined and waited for their moments with the ball and on 56’ after another fabulous bit of possession we switched the play and Alex Sharpe played Robbie Jones in to collect his second of the day
TNS then having to commit a few more players forward the game opened up a bit and became a little like basket ball, very end to end. Airbus carried on frustrating the opposition with their outstanding defensive performance
The last 8’ minutes become a bit more nervous for the young wing makers as TNS scored a goal on 82’ but we managed to see the game out winning 2-1 Airbus. The first time since 2019 we have managed a result against the current champions away non the less, demonstrating how good this current group are both on and off the pitch

Player of the week could have gone to a number of players but this week Robbie Jones has to take the stage. After a tough first half of the season Robbie has come back in to the group and seems to have matured and brings a different quality to his game. Trains well and plays well, always asking more of his own performance which naturally brings up that of the players around him. Well done Robbie

U17s Girls V Henllan (A)
We only had 10 players so the opponent went 10v10 and he had 1 sub .
The game started well after 10 minutes Olivia N made a great run down the left wing and cut it back to an in running Ellie V who calmly slotted it away to give Airbus the lead
5 minutes later after some great work by Guinnie she slid a ball through to an on running Ellie V again to calmly slot away
Some more brilliant football put Olivia N to slot home another after being put through by Guinnie again .
The hosts kept trying to push the visitors back but the defensive line stood firm.
Airbus should have gone 4 up after some quick football between Freya and Ellie calmly chipped home by Ellie to be pulled back for an offside decision.
Airbus weren’t to be deterred and after a lung busting over lapping run by Molly she cut it across to Freya to tap home .
The hosts pulled one back just before half time with a long range free kick .
And then got another one just after halftime from a corner as Airbus didn’t mark all the players and it was an easy finish .
Airbus then went down to 9 men as Ellie was dismissed.
This left a hole in midfield and although the hosts pushed they were continuously thwarted by the back line.
Even though we were a man down Airbus continued to create chances with Molly continuously making forward runs
Eventually Ellie was able to get a long shot away which found the back of the net ,and quickly after that she score a second to kill off the contest and give the visitors a much deserved 6-2 win.
Goals from Ellie V, Olivia N, Freya P, Ellis S and Molly H
P.O.M For her continuous overlapping runs causing threats all game Molly Harper
