Airbus Academy Report – 8th – 9th February 2025

Michelle Griffiths12 Feb - 22:29

Games against Newtown AFC, Borras Park Albion and West Kirby for our Young WingMakers

Airbus U8s – Newtown & Borras Park Albion (H)
The young Wingmakers played excellent football across the four 15 min matches, patient in possession and in the build-up it took a while to break down the Newtown defence 1-0 airbus in the first game.
The boys continued in the second game with excellent possession but with a little more forward play resulting in a 2-0 win, game three and the boys had now settled down switching the play and making some excellent third man runs to win the game 2-0, fourth game and Newtown got a goal against but the boys responded in a calm and determined manner to win the game 2-1 .

Overall a pleasing performance and a 7-1 win .

Players of the match Benji and Ollie , excellent work rate both in and out of possession

Airbus 8’s vs Borras Park 9’s
Really good test for the 8’s, many thanks to Borras, with them being a year older it was important to play at a high tempo and not get involved in a more physical game.
We really tried to make the pitch as big as possible and create lots of passing lines with patience and clever movement, lots of two touch and link up play.

Some excellent team goals and individual moments along with some important goal keeping ensuring a positive result of 7-2.

Well done to Reagan and George Gray for being the pick of the bunch showing some really mature consistency with their football.

Airbus U9s – Newtown (H)
Game 1
The U9 team fought hard against physical Newtown team, showcasing some impressive skills. The young Wingmakers demonstrated high pressing in the opposition half and a solid defensive effort – which gave us a good base to transition quickly into the attacking phase. We scored some excellent goals which ensured the team achieved an impressive positive result.

Game 2
In the second match, the challenge was significantly greater as several players were tired from their previous game. Nevertheless, the young Wingmakers persevered, worked hard and managed to score some impressive goals against the physically developed Newtown team. Player of the week:
Harry Jarvis
– Outstanding display of forward play shown down the left side with some brilliant goals scored into the far corner of the net. A quality performance from Harry. Well done

Airbus U10s – Newtown & West Kirby (H)
The Wingmakers had another double fixture day with Newtown and West Kirby visiting the Airfield.

We started the game really well and Jack Davies nearly opened the scoring early doors but his effort scraped the outside of the post. After some back and forth pressure, Newtown got the first goal.

However, it wasn’t long until we found ourselves in front. Ellis tapping in to get us level. Bobby Dazzler intercepting their keepers pass, 2 keep ups with his weak foot and a volley to finish.

The half ended with Toby chipping the ball forward to Ellis where it was just out of reach, he improvised and scorpion kicked it only for to find its way finding the bottom corner, puskas award contender!!

In the second half we again scored first and were in control of the game at that point. Maybe a thought of ‘the job is done’ crept into their minds as we dropped off it in the last 5 minutes, and the match eventually ending in a draw.

West Kirby were a strong physical team who could move the ball really well. We knew it would be a tough game. We said before the game can we keep the ball a little better than the first game by switching the play and overloading one side of the pitch more, this was clear to see!

We created a number of chances and got a deserved goal in the first half to go in level at the break. Second half was end to end with both teams trying to find a winner.

An excellent save by James Walsh at 1-1 kept us level. In the dying minutes of the game we switched off and 1 mistake lead to their second goal. A lot of pressure from us to again find the equaliser but it didn’t come.

I was proud of both performances from the boys today, great attitude and a smile on their faces at full time!

MoM goes to Toby Kitchen. Rock solid at the back. Tidy footwork to start the attack and some great decision making. Even had praise from the other manager. Well done!

Airbus U11s – Newtown & West Kirby (H)
Saturday we welcomed Newtown and West Kirby to the Airfield.

Our boys excelled all morning showing great attitudes and willingness in each game, whilst also producing some excellent football.

The boys were really positive in their build up play during the games, playing through the thirds with confidence, which resulted in plenty of goal scoring opportunities.

Player of the match - Will Houghton
Will worked tirelessly for the team by covering every blade of the pitch. Linking up brilliantly with teammates with his short and long range passing ability. Will remained positive always looking to move the ball quickly as possible, opening his body up well by switching the play.
Defensively Will was strong with his tackles which resulted in winning the ball back for his team.

The U11’s hosted Newtown and West Kirby on Saturday. A really good morning of football, two very competitive games which the lads battled well and played some excellent football at times.

Mom – Mason Davey, solid in defence, winning every battle that came his way and also very composed on the ball. Well done Mason

Airbus U12s – Newtown (H)
A battle for 2nd with Newtown at Airbus. Both teams on very good runs in the league.

First half Newtown strikes first from a corner which the Newtown player rose above our players to score. We quickly equalised straight after with Freddie E rounding the keeper to put the ball into an empty net. We then took the lead from Mynor who struck the ball really well from a cleared corner to make it 2-1.
Newtown then equalised from another corner just before HT.

Second half and it was all Airbus. We controlled majority of possession and territory. But on a counter attack Newtown did a 3rd to make it 3-2. 5 mins before the end of the game. We had a free kick at a tight angle. But with Harry Jeffries scoring his last 4 free kicks we had faith and he managed to find the top corner. Perfectly placed
MOTM – Freddie Edwards

Airbus U13s – Newtown (H)
This weekend, Our U13s continued their Academy league fixtures with a home game against Newtown. The visitors had won the last two previous fixtures when the sides had met, so the Young Wingmakers were expecting another tough fixture at The Airfield.

The early stages of the game were very even but neither team were able to create many goal scoring opportunities. The first meaningful chance fell to Airbus when Jacob Mountain charged down the ball from a Newtown player and then narrowly after shooting across goal.

The game was starting to settle down now with Airbus having the majority of the possession but Newtown always offering a threat on the counterattack. However, when the first goal came, it was well worth the wait. Leo Killick forced the Newtown keeper into a good save and the defence cleared the ball but squad captain, Henry Carter, was on hand to fire a superb shot into the top corner from 20 yards out for his first goal of the season. 1-0.

Ten minutes later, the Airbus lead was double after some excellent defensive work and long pass from Jacob Mountain allowed Harry Williams to break forward and finish coolly passed the Newtown keeper.2-0.

Airbus were now playing with confidence and a third goal soon came when some more good play down the left-hand side with Henry Carter and Fynley Wardle, ended up the ball with Harry Williams, who fired a dangerous ball across the box and Leo Killick was in a perfect position to slot home. 3-0. Shortly after, Newtown were back in the game when they were awarded a free kick on the halfway line, which was floated over the Airbus defence to an obvious offside player but the referee surprisingly allowed the goal to stand. Half Time 3-1

The second half started well for Airbus and they increased the lead back to three goals in the early stages when a cross from Daffydd Edwards was spilled by the goal keeper and Thomas Wright was on hand to tap into the goal. 4-1. This did not deter the visitors though and they once again reduced the deficit when they scored with an excellent free kick into the near corner. 4-2.

However, this setback only seemed to spur on the Wingmakers, and Miller Blackwell-Jones played another great pass from defence into the channel for Harry Williams to run onto and finish well for his second of the game. 5-2. As the game went into the later stages, Airbus were still showing an excellent attitude, working hard when out of possession to stop any meaningful attacks from Newtown and then producing some really positive play in attack.
Another goal came along when Daffydd Edwards broke free on an excellent Airbus Counterattack to finish well passed the keeper.6-2. The scoring wasn’t finished there though for Airbus as Daffydd quickly got his second when he barged his way through the Newtown defence to smash the ball into the roof of the net. 7-2.

Overall, an extremely positive performance, in and out of possession, from the squad and they got a deserved result on the day.

M.O.M :- Daffydd Edwards. A constant threat going forward but also worked tirelessly out of possession.

Airbus U14s – Newtown (H)
Airbus welcomed Newtown to the Hollingsworth looking to build on the previous back to back wins.

Following on from our previous game the objectives were aligned between players and Airbus started bright controlling possession and switching play through the middle of the pitch where Ellis Davies lined up for his debut alongside Jack Mitchell. Those two complimented each other well and a lot of our success come through them both.

Airbus were to be rewarded for their efforts when Jack Hardstaff floated a ball into the box and the keeper failed to catch it with Junior Kelly, as he does on so many occasions followed in to score his 7th goal of the season.

5 minutes later an Airbus corner was worked well with Joe Farrell and Charlie Smith combining well for the latter to curl an effort over the Newtown keeper into the top corner to give the Wingmakers a deserved 2-0 lead.

Airbus kept the pressure on and it was Jack Melia to score his 6th of the season next to give us a 3-0 lead going into half time.

The second half was a professional and mature performance, we retained the ball well and deterred any attacks that Newtown tried to create from both wide and central areas with good out of possession shape. All players contributed positively to today’s performance and can be pleased with the performance that gives us 3 wins in 3.

Player of the week; Charlie Smith – Charlie back into his secondary position of right back, got his head down and did the basics consistently right over 70 minutes. This as well as getting forward to support attacks, and offering some composure on the ball on regain in our defensive third. Chaz is having a great few weeks and continues to grow in his first season within the squad.
