Match preview: The Wingmakers v Guilsfield FC

Joe Sargent18 Nov 2021 - 15:08

Read all you need to know as the Wingmakers prepare to welcome Guilsfield to The Hollingsworth Group Stadium in a top of the table clash tomorrow.

Steve O’Shaughnessy’s Airbus side host fellow title challengers Guilsfield on Friday night in the JD Cymru North.

The Bus head into the crunch match with a four-point lead at the summit of the table. A 10-game winning run in the Welsh second tier has slammed down a marker to show how Airbus are serious contenders for the championship crown this term.

Guilsfield remain in the race for top spot. The Guils are yet to be defeated this season in the league racking up 10 victories and two draws. With a game in hand on the Wingmakers to come, the importance of this blockbuster encounter in Broughton is amplified.

When the two sides met in the first round of the Nathaniel MG Cup in July, the Bus ran out eventual winners on penalties in a nerve-jangling tie. Ryan Edwards converted the decisive spot-kick to kick off the 2021/22 campaign.

Team news

For much of the early months of the season, the Bus have regularly been without key first team players due to injuries. The strength of O’Shaughnessy’s squad and emergence of academy talent has enabled Airbus to thrive in adversity.

However, the Wingmakers could be buoyed by the potential returns of Ieuan Hewitt and Brady McGilloway on Friday. Both men have endured long spells on the treatment table with their respective injury problems, but the two defenders are now back in full contact training and vying for places in the squad.

Nathan Brown could be in line for a starting berth. The attacker marked his comeback from a broken foot last time out with an assist for Oli Lanceley in his impactful cameo performance from the bench at Llandudno.

O’Shaughnessy has a plethora of talent to pick from up top which is sure to cause the boss a few selection headaches. In addition to Brown’s welcome return, George Peers, Adam Davies, Jake Eyre and Lanceley have all been in red-hot form in recent weeks. This firepower gives Airbus a great chance of adding to the 48 league goals already scored in the club’s first 13 outings tomorrow.

One to watch

The Wingmakers – Oli Lanceley. The youngster has been an ever-present for the Bus since the season opener in July. The goalscoring expertise of Davies have often seen the consistent impressive displays of the striker sneak under the radar.

Lanceley netted the game-clinching strike in the triumph away at Llandudno so will be in confident mood against Nathan Leonard’s troops. It promises to be a game which will be decided by which team prevails in vital moments; the 21-year-old is capable of producing a pivotal moment of brilliance.

Guilsfield – Greg Draper. The Guils landed the massive coup of signing The New Saints’ all-time record goalscorer in the summer. Draper is yet to showcase his full array of talents since dropping down from the Welsh top-flight but has still bagged a healthy three goals in seven league appearances this season.

The Bus will need to be on their guard to keep the New Zealand International at bay. Previous success defending resolutely against the 32-year-old in the Cup match between the teams four months ago, suggests Airbus will have the belief to deny Draper opportunities to shine once more.
