Match Report: Airbus UK Broughton FC 2-1 Porthmadog FC

Michelle Griffiths13 Aug 2023 - 08:27

A windy afternoon, but Airbus add another three points to their tally

One change in the starting line-up from Tuesday's victory at Buckley, Jordan Evans came in to replace George Peers.

The game started with Airbus having a lot of possession in the Porthmadog half. Cooke found the space down the right causing problems for the Porthmadog left-back.

As the game settled, Airbus saw more of the ball and on 11 minutes, Jordan Evans brought the ball down excellently to be challenged by two Porthmadog players. The referee played advantage as the ball fell into Orton's path. Orton carried the ball down the left, resulting in a cross into the box to Lindfield in an excellent position between the Porthmadog centre halves. His first time volley saw his effort come crashing back off the post.

Shortly after, another chance was created by Airbus with brilliant work by McManus to win the ball back combining down the left with Orton, Evans and Eyre. Eyre cut the ball back to Cooke and his tame effort just drifted wide of the far post.

On the half hour mark, Porthmadog created their first clear cut chance. During their first period of real possession, they worked the ball well in the Airbus half. Tomassen was lucky to not give away a free kick on the edge of the box as the referee played advantage. The ball worked its way to Brookwell who tested Jones with a shot from a tight angle. Jones was able to deal with the shot and make a great save to see the ball go for a corner.

A brilliant switch of play from Palmer to find McManus down the right in space. Airbus worked the ball back inside through Rickett, Edwards and Eyre. Eyre set Palmer for him to take one touch and hit a stunning effort from 30 yards on the half volley to bring a good save from the Porthmadog keeper.

Airbus were forced into an early sub in the first half as Kieran Evans replaced Rickett after a late challenge earlier in the half.

Just before half-time, Airbus got their goal. An excellent long range shot from Jordan Evans was parried by Ellis to the feet of Lindfield, who had the easiest of tap-ins to make it 1-0 to Airbus.

Porthmadog started the second half brightly, which caused Airbus a few problems, especially after fresh legs were introduced after the hour mark by the visitors.

On 67 minutes, Airbus created another opportunity. Great patient build up down the right. McManus was able to fizz a superb cross across the face of the goal with Lindfield not quite finding the connection.

Four minutes later, Porthmadog was rewarded a penalty after Brookwell was taken down in the penalty area by Jones. Protests from Airbus were waved away by the referee. The resulting penalty was calmly scored by Owen to make it 1-1 with just over 20 minutes to play.

73 minutes on the clock and Airbus introduced fresh legs with Baker replacing Cooke.

It didn't take long for Baker to make his mark as he made it 2-1 to Airbus.

A corner from Jordan Evans was headed clear by the Porthmadog defence, which found its way to Baker on the edge of the box, who took a touch to set himself and send an unstoppable shot past Ellis.

Five minutes left of the 90 and Airbus had the ball in the back of the net again when Jordan Evans converted a free kick, but to see it not given as the ball was deemed to have been rolling.

Baker's goal was enough to see Airbus over the line and win 2-1. A tough afternoon especially with the windy conditions but Airbus make it 9 points out of 9.

We now turn our attention to Llanidloes Town away next Saturday to try and keep an undefeated run in tact.
