Airbus progress to round 4 with a goal fest

Saturday afternoon we welcomed Ardal South East side Goytre to The Hollingsworth Group Stadium on a cold winters day.

Kick off was delayed by 15 minutes due to our visitors having traffic issues on their long journey from South Wales.

There was a few changes to the starting line-up that started at Denbigh Town a week ago, with Sam Fenney, Dan Wood, Dan Collins and Sam Baker replacing Keighan Jones, Nathan Williams, Jordan Evans and Kaiden Cooke.

Unfortunately, James Davies had to pull out of the starting line-up as a precaution after the warm-up, but up stepped our vice-captain, Jordan Evans.

Goytre got us underway in the first half kicking from left to right.

The first 10 minutes were very scrappy, with the visitors disrupting Airbus’ flow and on 13 minutes, Airbus had their first corner of the game but it was wasted.

As the WingMakers started to settle and be patient with their build-up play and quarter of an hour on the clock, George Peers played a great through ball into the path of Baker, but his run was deemed to have gone a little to early as the linesman raised his flag for offside.

The visitors recorded their first chance of the afternoon on 18 minutes when a strike from the Goytre forward was superbly blocked by Kieran Evans.

Airbus had settled now and were starting to play the football they can. A nice passage of play between Collins and Jordan Evans released Peers to give him a shooting opportunity but on this occasion his effort was blocked.

Just before the half hour, Airbus had their breakthrough when Tom Dougherty delivered a great cross into the box and Peers was unmarked in the 6-yard box to head the ball pass Massaro.

Goytre could have had the perfect response to going a goal down, as their first meaningful attack caused a bit of uncertainty in the Airbus penalty area. Airbus failed to deal with the initial header which allowed a follow up header but with a bit of luck for Airbus the Goytre header clipped the top of the cross bar.

Dougherty was finding himself in very good positions to deliver the ball into the Goytre box and this time it was deflected for a corner; the resulting corner was wasted and Massaro was there to collect and ease the pressure for the visitors.

After his beautiful strike against Bangor a couple of weeks ago, Kieran Evans fancied his chances with another long-range effort. The ball was played from right to left with Jordan Evans playing the ball into his brother who took one touch to set himself and strike the ball across the Goytre goal, but it was too close to the goalkeeper.

Five minutes before half time, Airbus had their second. A free kick was given on the far right and Jordan Evans stepped up to deliver another fantastic ball into the box and Oli Lanceley met the cross with a thunderous header which settled in the top corner.

Lanceley recorded his second of the game after a penalty was awarded on 43 minutes by the referee for a handball and our No.19 calmly slotted the ball past Massaro.

Airbus weren’t done as it looked like they were going in with a 4-0 lead as Peers struck the ball sweetly, but Massaro superbly tipped over.

Half time and Airbus went in 3 goals to the good after growing into the half after a scrappy 15 minutes.

Airbus got us underway in the second half looking to increase their lead.

The WingMakers started the second half a lot brighter than the first half and some patient build-up resulted in another shot from Peers which the Goytre keeper was more of a match for once again.

On the hour, Goytre were awarded a lifeline when the referee pointed to the spot after a clumsy tackle from Doughtery. Lewis Iles converted the penalty sending Sam Fenney the wrong way.

Rickett had dominated the back line along with Wood really well from the first whistle.

Rickett’s intercepted a forward pass from Goytre and carried the ball and played a nicely weighted pass into Jordan Evans, but his pass was intercepted for a corner.

With 20 minutes remaining, Airbus made their first substitution of the game with Joe Palmer replacing Tyler McManus.

Lanceley completed his hat-trick on 72 minutes. A cross was delivered into the box and Peers looked to have got his second of the game but Massaro pulled of a great point blank save to deny our number 11, but the rebound fell to Lanceley’s head, and he made no mistake in taking his chance.

Two minutes later, Airbus had their 5th after a free kick was given just outside the box for a foul. Jordan Evans set piece conversion has been incredible this season so far and he didn’t disappoint with this one and he curled and unbelievable shot into the right-hand side of the net.

This was Jordan Evans’ final contribution as Airbus made a double substitution with Nath Williams and Ieaun Jones-Wellstead replacing Sam Rickett and Jordan Evans.

On 80 minutes, Sam Baker made it 6 after Palmer passed the ball into Baker’s path and he went on one of his direct runs as he carried the ball to finish brilliantly past the Goytre keeper.

Peers scored his brace with two minutes remaining of the 90, Baker with some hard work down the left allowed him to cross an inviting delivery across the Goytre box and Peers was there to tap in and make it 7 for Airbus.

The WingMakers progress to next round and await their next opponents.
