Entering into the second week of a set of tough fixtures for the Young Wingmakers was a trip down to Clappers Lane to play Gresford FC.
A bright start from the young Airbus side, as they were able to get into their stride of neat build up play and passing combinations.
Unfortunately, a few poor decisions in the final third cost Airbus the chance to take the lead and this became the theme to what would be a frustrating day at the office.
Chance after chance in the first half went begging as the lads just couldn’t seem to find that magic touch to get the ball in the back of the net and the half time whistle capped off what was a frustrating half of football.
As the second half whistle blew, the Wingmakers came flying out the blocks looking to put themselves ahead and a series of fantastic saves by the Gresford keeper kept the score 0-0.
Minutes ticked by as frustrations grew as we just couldn’t seem to find that missing piece, Airbus were caught on the counter attack and a neat ball in from the right found the Gresford man unmarked at the back post for a tap in to give them the lead against the run of play.
Fortunately, this spurred the Airbus boys on even more to try and find that goal and just minutes later, Cal Hughes is played in 1v1 with the keeper and as the keep manages to make the initial save, Theo Williams was on hand to blast the rebound into the back of the net. RELIEF!.
This proved to be a pivotal moment as Airbus pushed for that winner they so desperately wanted, a shot from the edge of the area from Will Gordon produced a world class save from the Gresford centre half low to his right hand side, the whistle blows for a penalty as the ball trickles into the back of the net adding to the ever growing frustrations.
A red card was to follow as Cal Hughes steps up to take the penalty. The resulting penalty is saved by the Gresford keeper as another clear cut chance goes begging.
As the game draws to a close, Airbus manage to camp themselves in the Gresford half searching for that goal which unfortunately didn’t arrive and the game finished 1-1. Disappointment all round as the lads worked tirelessly on a heavy pitch, sticking to their game plan but just missing that final piece of the jigsaw.

Worked his socks off in midfield with some tackles and then making himself a nuisance up front towards the end.
