Danny Warren with a hat-trick as the Wingmakers go within one point of Colwyn Bay

After a couple of postponements, the game between Llay and Airbus was played at the home of Colwyn Bay on a cold Tuesday evening.

Airbus made a few changes to the starting line-up that beat Colwyn Bay in the semi-final of the WBS League Cup on Friday night. There was starts for Josh Stevenson, Dan Collins, Oli Lanceley and Sam Baker who replaced Tyler McManus, Jordan Evans, George Peers and Ryan Edwards.

Airbus got us underway for the evening in their all away maroon kit kicking left to right.

The first five minutes was a quiet affair with both teams having a bit of possession and getting used to the pitch. On 8 minutes Airbus were rewarded a penalty when the Llay defender took down Sam Baker in the area.

Up stepped Danny Warren and he made no mistake in sending Luke Green the wrong way and giving the WingMakers the lead.

It was kind of one-way traffic after the goal and James Davies was causing problems as he cut inside Owen Payne and sent a low curled shot towards goal, but it was straight into Green’s hands.

Some great play between Dan Collins and Josh Stevenson on 19 minutes allowed them to link up down the right, Stevenson squared the ball to Warren, but his effort was blocked by Thomas Cartwright.

Airbus were starting to get some joy in the channels and this time it was from the left as Kieran Evans delivered a great ball to the near post which was attacked by Davies, but it was cleared for a corner. From the resulting corner, Davies met a delivery from Joe Palmer, but his headed effort was just over the bar.

The delivery into the box so far through the game was great and on 33 minutes, Kieran Evans stood over a free kick which de delivered inch perfect for Stevenson to connect with a header, but it was blocked by a Llay defender.

Two minutes later, Airbus had their second and it was our No.8 again. The ball fell to him around the 12-yard mark and he smashed home a powerful effort past Green at his near post.

37 minutes, a great ball found Oli Lanceley who was able to flick the ball into Baker’s path, but the young wingers was pulled up for handball.

5 minutes before half time, Airbus were forced into a substitution with Toby Vickery replacing Joe Palmer.

Airbus were finishing the half strong, as some great work by Baker was rewarded after he found Warren, but Green made a great save at his near post from the Airbus forward.

Danny Warren could have completed his hat trick before half time as Baker pulled the ball back to him, but this time Warren’s effort was over the bar

The referee blew for half time and Airbus looked comfortable with their 2-0 lead.

Llay were out early after half time, and they eventually got us underway trying to reduce the deficit.

It was Airbus who had the first chance of the half, Davies managed to shift the ball out of his feet, which pulled a save out of Green.

Llay had a lot of the ball in the five minutes that followed as Airbus struggled to get the ball down and play and on 51 minutes Llay had their first meaningful attempt on target as Scott Swords connected with ball really well from around 20 yards, but it was comfortable for Keighan Jones in the end.

Warren was searching for his hat trick and on 58 minutes he tried his luck from the edge of the area, but his effort was wide of the far post.

Green was called into action on 62 minutes as he was quick off his line to deny James Davies.

On 64 minutes, Airbus made a double substitution with Jordan Evans and Kaiden Cooke replacing Nath Williams and James Davies.

With just over 15 minutes remaining, Warren had that third goal to complete his hattrick. A great run by Cooke down the right allowed him to pull the ball back to Warren and he finished brilliantly first time into the bottom corner leaving Green with no chance.

Llay number 9 Jonathan Collo had a chance to get his name on the scoresheet with an effort towards the top corner, but the strike was comfortable for Jones as he saved well.

Jordan Evans found himself in some space on the edge of the area and he tried a shot, but it was just wide.

With 10 minutes remaining, Danny Warren’s job was done for the evening as George Peers replaced him. It didn’t take long for the Airbus No.11 to get his name on the scoresheet.

A long ball from Sam Rickett found Peers superbly in the Llay penalty box and the touch from Peers was exquisite as he swivelled, and his shot found the bottom right hand corner to make it 4-0 to the WingMakers.

Josh Stevenson completed the goalscoring for the night on 89 minutes when a corner from Jordan Evans was met by a thunderous header by the young defender to make it 5-0.

The full-time whistle blew on a very comfortable evening for Airbus as their win takes them within 1 point of league rivals Colwyn Bay.
