Three things we learned: Conwy Borough

Matthew Baldwin31 Jan 2022 - 14:00

Read the main three takeaways from the Wingmakers professional 3-1 victory against Conwy Borough.

Adam Davies grabbed a 12 minute brace and Oli Lanceley grabbed a late first half strike made sure of a comfortable night for our first home game of the new year.

Although Thomas Weir did grab a goal back for the visitors midway through the second period. The victory made sure we kept our four point gap at the top of the JD Cymru North with ten games to go.

We take a look at the three things we learnt from our professional victory at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium.

Davies breaks the goalscoring record

The two goals for our number 19 moved him to the top of the JD Cymru North all time goal record. He has an impressive 26 goals in 19 league games, scoring in 12 of our 19 matches. With only three sides not having the league top scorer hit the back of the net.

He has been in scintillating form all season, and has showed why he is the top of the leader in the scoring bracket. Who knows how many more goals he can score with the ten league games remaining this season. All we know is though as no matter what, this season will go down in the history book for The Wingmakers, and even more so for the 25 year old.

Double debut in defence

Last night saw the debut for two Wingmakers, with Ieuan Hewitt making his long awaited first start following a seven month layoff due to a foot injury that was sustained against Llanwitt Major in pre season. However, the 28 year old did not show signs of rustiness with his first appearance for Airbus.

Hewitt had two fantastic assists whilst filling in for Simon Spender at right back on Friday night. But it wasn't just his eye for finding goals that was of quality, but his all round play. Making some key stops and last tackles making sure the Borough had an uncomfortable night down the right flank during his 82 minutes on the field.

But it wasn't just Hewitt making his debut, but our new signing Billy Nicholas. The signing from Gresford made his first appearance for The Wingmakers after joining two weeks ago. He made a great cameo appearance in the final 10 minutes of the game.

The two players show how much depth we have in our squad all over the park, and with a fully fit squad, the last ten games could cause a lot of pre match headaches over team selection for Steve O'Shaughnessy.

Pressure, what pressure

The Wingmakers have been top of the JD Cymru North for most of the campaign, and came into the match off the back of a tough loss at the hands of Ruthin Town. Only the second time in the league this season we had tasted defeat.

However, questions could have been asked about our title credentials but we put silence to them after Conwy. Just like we did following our loss earlier in the season against Bangor we showed resilience and determination to make sure lighting would strike again. So as we head for home and the pressure will only intensify as we get closer to April, Friday night showed why with even the cards stacked against us we came out on top.

30 points to play for, and the chance for an instant return to the Cymru Premier only a matter of games away, our fate remains well and truly in our hands. Our next assignment sees us travel to Penrhyncoch where we will look to bag another three points.
