Young Wingmakers - Academy Weekend Review

Young Wingmakers - Academy Weekend Review

Mike Phythian20 Sep 2022 - 19:24

Excellent Weekend Of Fixtures For The Young Wingmakers

We had a free week from FAW Academy fixtures, which gave a chance for a number of our squads to play matches against Pro Club opposition. Our squads held a minutes silence prior to our matches in memory of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II

U9

Our U9 squad travelled away to play Manchester United FC at the Cliff. An excellent fixture against Pro club opposition for the Young Wingmakers. The performance from all players on the day was excellent & the lads thoroughly enjoyed themselves throughout.

Player of the week:

James Gray - playing vs Man Utd at the Cliff training facility James showed fantastic technical ability throughout the matches involved. His positional play via many different positions helped him & team defend strongly & provide many goal scoring opportunities.

U10 & U11

The under 10’s and 11’s had the privilege to play in a fixture against Leicester City Academy this weekend.

It was a brilliant opportunity for both squads to mix and get to know eachother.  The players took information on board brilliantly and applied it the best they could.

It was a brilliant experience for the boys to visit such great facilities and we would like to thank Leicester City and their coaching staff for a great afternoon.

Players of the week:

U10:
Levi Burgon - when the team needed Levi the most he made sure he was switched on to make some critical saves.

U11:
Connor Williams - excellent defensive display, always looking at how to try and play out as opposed to panicking on the ball.

U13

WREXHAM AFC U13 2-2 AIRBUS FC U13

A challenging away fixture for our U13 squad away at Wrexham AFC U13.

Wrexham are the benchmark locally in terms of status. We needed to give a good account of ourselves. We are still very much work in progress as a group & we wanted to enjoy possession in key areas.

Although the lads were focused, we took time to adapt to a new system (this is to be expected) and Wrexham scored a very lucky goal. Our equaliser was a fine finish from Nataniel Rakowiecki as he rounded the keeper and slotted home with his right foot, but also the build up to create this chance was excellent. As we approached half time we became increasingly more confident and the lads took on board the half time detail.

2nd half and against the wind that got up, Wrexham pressed us back and we soaked up a lot of pressure. We gave away a penalty, but what a fantastic save from Bailey Davies and a great reaction from our defenders to clear the ball.

We conceded a very dubious goal - was the ball over the line?? - the referee awarded the goal very quickly so we move on.

The lads heads never dropped & we kept true to ourselves and rotated the lads with equal game time as we planned. We tweaked the formation and were firmly on the front foot.

Our fitness was showing to be excellent throughout the team. We had 2 good chances to equalise & finally from a great counter attack - Nataniel Rakowiecki got his and the teams 2nd goal by following up well with another 1st time finish.

The lads deserved that 100%...we believe if there had been another 10 mins we would have gone on even further in the game.

Really proud of them all, great to see Max Murray who was injured on the day with us, supporting the lads & organising the warm up - Well done everyone, you are all improving week by week.

Player of the week:

Bailey Davies - Has been excellent so far this season. Great character, improved distribution and is improving technically week by week. An excellent penalty save at a key moment in the fixture, gave the lads confidence and belief and enabled us to get back in the game .

FAW GIRLS DEVELOPMENT U16 3-0 AIRBUS FC U14

The U14s hosted the FAW Academy Girls u16s. A lacklustre performance from the boys who couldn’t quite get to grips with the wind and movement of the girls. 3-0 defeat.

Player of the week:

Thomas Poyner - Pulled off some great saves throughout the fixture.

U15

AIRBUS FC 2 - 0 STOKE CITY RTC

An early kick off on Saturday morning saw a good performance from the 15s against a solid Stoke RTC side. The lads started well and led 15 minutes into the game with Kenzie Pickles finishing a good move off from the right. Kenzie Pickles again added a second game before half time, with an exact replica of the first goal. Second half, Stoke RTC made it more difficult and stifled the Airbus attacks, but Airbus still created a number of chances, which they failed to convert. Overall this was a great Airbus performance, keeping better possession of the ball, being more patient in their build up, and showing what we have been working on in training.

Player of the week:

Rory Green - Solid performance at the back by Rory. Great forward passing and comfortable in possession, and defended well out of possession. Showing the good work he has been producing in training.

U16

AIRBUS FC 4-2 STOKE CITY RTC

With no weekend fixture in the FAW Academy cup, the U16s invited down Stoke RTC to play at The Airfield. Stoke grabbed two very early goals taking the lead 2-0 after 10 minutes. With the first being a fantastic strike. Unfortunately there was a substantial break in play after one of the Stoke player sustained a nasty injury. Once played resumed, Airbus started really well with Rob Austing slotting home to bring us back into the game. Shortly after Christopher Williams equalised for Airbus from a corner. The second half carried on much along the same lines with a very competitive game. Callum Hughes slotted home from the penalty spot whilst Dan Semple rounded the day off scoring from a cut back from Gethin Roberts. All in all a good performance by the U16 squad.

All at Airbus UK Broughton would like to wish a speedy recovery to the player who sustained a nasty injury.

Player of the week:

Gethin Roberts - Coming on at half time Gethin shown the quality we have within the squad. He made a very good impact from the right wing often beating his man in a 1v1. He also shown the intensity pressing and battling to win possession back.

U18

AIRBUS FC 1-1 CHIRK AAA FC RESERVES

Our U18s hosted table toppers Chirk. Airbus created enough opportunities to win several games but a lack of cutting edge in front of goal coupled with some questionable refereeing calls meant 1-1 was a fair scoreline. It’s disappointing not to have won a game that we dominated and in which our goalkeeper was virtually redundant. We certainly can’t fault the lads for their effort and the football we produced. We just lacked a cutting edge which is strange considering the quality we have.

Player of the week:

Callum Dodd - Scored the opening goal to put us 1-0 up, he was defensively & offensively outstanding today.
