Airbus crowned National League Cup winners after 3-2 win against Trefelin BGC

After success last Friday against Bangor 1876, the WingMakers travelled down to Aberystwyth to take on South Wales outfit Trefelin BGC to be crowned National League Cup Winners.

Mark Allen decided to go with the same starting line-up which started against Bangor a week ago, with Sam Rickett coming on to the bench returning from injury.

Danny Warren got us underway in the first half on an overcast but mild evening in Mid Wales.

Airbus set out to press hard from the first whistle and on this was given them chances against the Trefelin defence.

On 4 minutes, Airbus were rewarded a free kick which Jordan Evans stepped up to take but his effort wasn’t troubling Alex Pennock as it sailed over the bar.

Roan Piper had Trefelin’s first attempt on goal with an ambitious shot from range which sailed over the cross bar.

George Peers thought he had the opening goal on 22 minutes. Tyler McManus’ delivered a great cross into the Trefelin box which Peers headed into the back of the net, but the linesman cut short the celebrations as his flag went up for offside.

The header started a roll of efforts for Peers. He tried his luck from just outside the box, but his effort was comfortable for Pennock as he gathered the ball into his chest.

McManus was involved again on 27 when he delivered another cross into the danger area, the ball clipped the crossbar, and it landed at the feet of Peers once again, but it was over the bar as he struggled to keep the shot down.

George Peers didn’t have long to wait to get that opening goal. Danny Warren played a delightful chip into the path of Peers, and he smashed the ball past Pennock to give Airbus a 1-0 lead.

Danny Warren had an effort on 31 minutes which he didn’t quite catch as he dragged his shot wide of the post.

Peers alongside Cooke was Airbus’ main threat through the first half. Peers brought out a Maradona as he sailed past Lee Trundle and set James Davies, but the winger’s effort was blocked.

Airbus finished the first half a goal to the good and probably should have had more.
Trefelin got us underway in the second half looking to reduce the deficit, but it was Airbus who started brightly as they looked to double their lead.

Some great work by that man again Peers, allowed Warren to get on the ball as he dropped in and he delivered an inch perfect outside of the boot pass to Cooke. Cooke delivered a great ball for Davies at the back post, but it was out of reach for the Airbus No.20.

As the game approached the hour mark, Airbus were rewarded a free kick for a foul on Cooke. The set piece maestro Jordan Evans stood over the set piece and with his wand of a left foot struck a curling effort into the bottom right had corner to give Airbus a 2-0 lead.

Airbus switched off for a couple of minutes after their second goal, when a long ball up the pitch by Trefelin found Piper and rounded the on-rushing Keighan Jones and passed the ball into an empty net to make it 2-1.

This gave Trefelin a bit of hope and they had another shot shortly after as a free kick was taken by Callum Saunders which brought a good save out of Jones as he pushed it out for a corner.
With 20 minutes remaining, Airbus did have a third. Cooke won a free kick on the left side, which Jordan Evans played short to Warren as he flicked in into the path of Nath Williams. The centre half took a touch and then placed a perfect shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

A fourth goal looked more likely at this point as Danny Warren was played through and as he poked the ball past Pennock the flag went up to give the Airbus forward offside.

Trefelin were pushing for a goal to get back into the game. Trundle asked questions of the referee on 80 minutes as he went down in the penalty area, but the referee waved away his shouts.

With 9 minutes of the 90 remaining, Oli Lanceley replaced a tiring George Peers.

Trefelin made it a nervy end to the game for Airbus as a penalty was rewarded to the South Wales side after a clumsy foul by Josh Stevenson. Saunders stepped up and sent Jones the wrong way.

Airbus tried to sure the midfield up on 86 minutes as Sam Rickett
replaced Danny Warren.
There was five minutes of time added but Trefelin were unable to come back, and Airbus were crowned Welsh Blood Service National Cup Winners.
